Carl Douglas: Kung Fu Fighting
I am especially nostalgic about this one. It is the first song I ever played on the radio. It’s a cracking tune and one that we heard a million times on the radio. From ‘74, this is one of the highest selling singles of all time, making Carl Douglas a global one-hit-wonder.
There were loads of things about this song that I never knew till recently, including its back story and its Indian connection (kindly reminded by Thakur a couple of days ago!). Biddu Appiyah – yes, our very own, Indian son from Bangalore, the guy who brought us Nazia Hassan’s “Disco Deewane” and did the score for Qurbani (“Aap Jaisa Koi” – here’s looking at you Chandru!) is the Producer of this smash hit single. Biddu was looking for someone to record a song written by Larry Weiss (do remember that name, I’ll talk about him in a couple of days). He randomly picked Carl Douglas, a journeyman singer. After recording the A-side, Biddu decided he need a B-side to the song. He didn’t have any songs and only less than an hour of studio time left. He asked Carl Douglas if he had any songs he had written. They picked out King-Fu Fighting as a novelty filler and recorded it in 10 minutes…..the record company heard it and went nuts! They insisted it had to be the A-side and the rest as they say, is Hooo Haaah! ….
